5 injured as BCL factions clash at SBMC
At least five people, including a police official, were injured in a clash between two rival groups of Bangladesh Chhatra League on Barisal Sher-e-Bangla Medical College campus early yesterday.
Following the clash, the medical college authorities imposed restrictions on all sorts of political activities on the campus for an indefinite period.
The clash occurred around 2:00am when supporters of Imran Hossain, president of college unit BCL, clashed with supporters of Anup Sarkar, another BCL leader, over gaining control on the campus, sources said.
During the hour-long clash, incidents of chase and counter-chase took place between the groups carrying sharp weapons. Five rooms of Habibur Rahman Hostel were also vandalised, witnesses said.
The injured are Nasim, Rajiv, Shuva and Tahsib of the college, and Barisal Sadar Police Station's Assistant Sub-Inspector Farid. The students took first aid at the medical college while the cop received treatment at the police medical centre in the city.
Sources said Imran is loyal to Barisal city AL leader and lawmaker Jebunnessa Afroj, while Anup is a supporter of district AL President Abul Hasanat Abdullah.
Both groups blamed each other for yesterday's incident.
Bhaskar Saha, principal of the medical college, said law enforcers brought the situation under control around 3:00am.
Later in the day, the college authorities held an emergency meeting of the academic council. A five-member probe committee led by Jahangir Alom, head of microbiology department, was formed. It was asked to submit its report within three working days.
