4 'robbers' killed in 'gunfights'
Four alleged robbers were killed on Wednesday in separate "gunfights" in Keraniganj and Faridpur, claimed police.
In Keraniganj, the gunfight took place at Ruhitpur between a group of robbers and police, leaving two alleged robbers killed.
The other gunbattle, in Faridpur, was between two groups of robbers, police said.
The deceased in the Keraniganj incident were identified as Montajul Islam, 35, and Sabuj, 34.
Shah Mizan Shafiur Rahman, superintendent of police in Dhaka, said they apprehended Montajul and Sabuj from Mawa Road on Wednesday afternoon.
Based on the information gleaned from the two, police took them along to Porahati area of Ruhitpur in search of illegal arms.
Associates of Montaj and Sabuj at one stage opened fire on the police and police also returned fire, the SP said, adding that the two detainees sustained bullet injuries during the shootout.
After they were transported to Mitford Hospital, the doctors on duty declared them dead at around 3:00pm.
Montaj was leader of a robbery gang that was active in Dhaka and surrounding areas and he used to propagate against the government using a Facebook account, claimed the SP.
The gunfight in Faridpur between two groups of robbers took place at 12:30am on Nuru Mia Bypass Road at Pairpur area under Faridpur Sadar upazila, said police.
The deceased were identified as Faruk Fakir, 45, son of late Karim Fakir from Shariatpur and Hridoy Hossain Manik, 30, son of Ratan Mia from Barguna, reports a correspondent in Faridpur.
According to police, Faruk and Hridoy belonged to a band of robbers who were involved in the robbery at Meghan Jewelleries in Faridpur town on July 20.
Najimuddin, officer-in-charge of Faridpur Sadar Police Station, said a patrol team of police arrived at the bypass after hearing gunshots.
The police fired two shots as the fleeing criminals were shooting at the law enforcers, he said, adding that the two bodies were found after the rivalling robbers left the spot. “They were shot during the gunfight between two groups of robbers.”
Sirajul Islam, the doctor on duty at Faridpur Medical College Hospital, said, the two men were already dead when they were brought to the hospital.
Police claimed to have recovered a firearm, three bullets and nine crude bombs from the spot.
The two were accused in several robbery cases filed with different police stations in Dhaka, Faridpur and Comilla, police said.
