3 cops hurt in Ctg clash
Three cops received bullets in a post-polls clash between two rival groups of Jubo league and Chhatra League at Shershah Baizid in Chittagong yesterday.
Sub-Inspector Sayem and Assistant Sub-Inspector Sanjib of Baizid Police Station, and constable Manik were undergoing treatment at Chittagong Medical College Hospital.
Police said supporters of Mahbubul Alam and Farid Ahmed Chowdhury locked in the clash over election rivalry. The two were councillor aspirants in Jalalabad Ward-2 in the city polls.
Known to be followers of Chittagong mayor-elect AJM Nasir Uddin, both of them lost in Tuesday's election. The ruling Awami League did not have any councillor favourite in the ward.
Though Mahbubul is known as a BNP man, his brothers Elias and Raza are leaders of pro-ruling party Jubo League and Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL). On the voting day, Elias' men fought pitched battles with the supporters of local BCL leader Mehedi Hassan over control of polling centres. Mehedi worked for councillor hopeful Farid, according to police.
Mehedi's house in Baizid area came under attack on Wednesday night, allegedly from Elias and his associates.
Witnesses said over 100 BCL activists from Chittagong Polytechnic Institute, led by BCL leaders Mehedi and Mohiuddin, tried to attack Elias's house around 1:30pm yesterday in retaliation to the previous incident.
Carrying firearms, sharp weapons and sticks, they vandalised several shops in the area, prompting nearly 100 traders downing their shutters.
As the followers of Elias tried to resist the attackers, chases and counter chases took place between the two groups till 2:30pm.
Law enforcers fired at least 20 shots in the air to quell the disturbance. The troublemakers also fired at least 15 shots, leaving the three cops injured, said Babul Chandra Banik, officer-in-charge of Baizid Police Station.
Police were preparing a case in this connection last night.
