Romeo and Juliet staged in local dialect
An adaptation of Shakespeare's tragedy "Romeo and Juliet" was staged in the local dialect at Mymensingh Shilpakala Academy auditorium this past week.
Onnesha Theatre, a troupe of Mymensingh brought the play "Bhanu Chander Pala" in local dialect, blending with the folk-culture of Mymensingh region.
The pala, adapted and directed by Sayik Siddiquee, a member of Bangolok Theatre in Dhaka, is the second show of the troupe. Earlier the group staged the pala at Jatiya Kabi Kazi Nazrul Islam University in Trishal here.
The cast of the pala included Moniruzzaman, Atiqur Rahman Sujon, Al Amin, Amol, Amjad Srabon, Tanmoy Tonu, Monir Hossain Jibon, Rubel and Shuvo.
About the play, Sayik Siddiquee said, "Shakespeare is a great poet of all times and the adaptation was an experimental work of the group to realise the importance about Shakespeare as a universal poet."
"The dialect of Kishoreganj, a district of Mymensingh region, was used in the play blending it with traditional folk-elements to make it understandable to the layperson," added Siddiquee.
Earlier, a discussion was held, where speakers hailed the initiative, saying the tragic play still touches everybody. There have been many film versions of the play and the story has inspired many musical responses by composers. Themes running through the play address the consequences of immature blind passion, hatred and prejudice which prevail in our society, added the speakers.
Journalists Golam Mustafa, Md Saiful Islam; lecturers of JKKNIU's English Department Shakhawat Jamil Saikat and Al Muktadir; theatre personality and poet Anwara Sultana attended the discussion.
