Prachyanat to stage “Bon Manush” today
Theatre troupe Prachyanat is bringing back Eugene O'Neill's "The Hairy Ape" on stage in their adaptation titled "Bon Manush". The production will be staged today at 7pm at Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy's Experimental Theatre Hall. Directed by Bakar Bokul and choreographed by Parvin Sultana Kolly, Rifat Ahmed Nobel is in charge of sound management and ABS Xem is behind stage and lights.
The setting takes place in the belly of an ocean liner where workers stoke the engines of the ship with coal. The grimy work is reflected in the burly labourers' appearance, with Yank being the most brutish of them all. Meanwhile, Mildred Douglas, who is the wealthy daughter of the ship's director, venture below decks and comes face to face with Yank, the sight of whom makes her scream with fright. Her reaction triggers self doubt in Yank, and he ventures into the outside world to find a sense of belonging only to be shunned by all walks of society.
