Fourth staging of Hamlet today at BSA
As part of the yearlong celebration of William Shakespeare's legacy, a Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy (BSA) production of "Hamlet", the most powerful tragedy by legendary playwright, is set to be staged today at 7pm at the main auditorium of National Theatre Hall of BSA.
Eminent litterateur Syed Shamsul Haq translated the play into Bangla as what would be one of his last works. Renowned thespian Ataur Rahman has directed the play with a repertory cast put together by BSA. The production was premiered on April 16.
The story of the tragic play revolves around Denmark's King Hamlet's death, which was greatly mourned by his son Prince Hamlet. Internal conflicts arise when his mother marries his crown-ascending uncle who is also his father's murderer. The external turmoil is mirrored by Prince Hamlet's inner struggle, which eventually leads him to avenge his father's death.
The incorporation of poems and songs by Rabindranath Tagore, Jibanananda Das and Syed Shamsul Haq along with the intrusion of light comedy of traditional jatrapala gives the production a new dimension.
