Nashid Kamal receives Channel i Music Award
Professor Dr. Nashid Kamal is a multi-talented person. Skilled in various musical styles, she is also an accomplished academic, writer and Nazrul researcher. The reputed artiste was awarded the Channel i Music Award yesterday in Nazrul Sangeet category for her unique solo album titled “Gaan-e Gaan-e Nazrul Jeeboni”. The album, released from ME Label, was launched last year at the Gulshan Ladies' Club, and was also made available online.
“I am happy to receive this very special award, because eminent Nazrul exponents select the award winner from the submission of all the Nazrul Sangeet albums released last year,” said Nashid Kamal.
About the album, the singer said: “The album consists of a biographical narration of Nazrul's life -- from his childhood to his last days -- and the 12 songs are interjected in between to show that journey. The album begins with 'Hera Hote Hele Dule', an Islamic song, because Nazrul started his life in a maktab (institute of Islamic education). It then goes on to present various kinds of Nazrul songs: love songs, songs of melancholy, folk song, raga-based song, songs from his leto music days, and ends with 'Masjid er'i Pashey Amaye Kobor Diyo Bhai', symbolising his lay to rest next to the Dhaka University Central Mosque.”
Nashid Kamal wrote the script, lent her voices to recitation and recorded songs for the album, while Durbadal Chattopadhyay arranged and directed the music. The artiste has started working on another biographical album on her grandfather, the legendary artiste Abbasuddin Ahmed. The recording for the album will start next year. This year in December, the artiste's new book “Path of the Comet and Other Essays” (Translation of Kazi Nazrul Islam's essays) will be published from Nazrul Institute.
