Bengal Classical Music Fest To Set Sail On November 27
Army Stadium will reverberate once more with pristine melodies and rhythms along with the world's largest gathering of sub-continental classical music loving souls.
Dedicated to artist Qayyum Chowdhury, SQUARE presents Bengal Classical Music Festival 2015 is being organised by Bengal Foundation, supported by BRAC BANK and powered by Robi. The five day (November 27- December 1) grand classical music fiesta will run from 7pm to 5am everyday.
A press conference was held yesterday at Hotel Sonargaon where Luva Nahid Choudhury, DG, Bengal Foundation, elaborated on the fourth installment of the event. Among others, Abul Khair, Chairman, Bengal Foundation; Syed Mahbubur Rahman, MD, BRAC Bank Limited; Syed Malik Mohammad Sayeed, Head of Marketing, Square Toiletries; Syed Fahim Munaim, CEO , Maasranga Television and Mahtab Uddin Ahmed, COO of Robi spoke at the press meet.
Expectations run high as this year's event will see a bigger crowd, with new surprises of music maestros … for the first time legendary Ustad Zakir Hussain will perform solo, Carnatic vocalist Padmavibhushan Dr. Balamuralikrishna, the senior most artiste of this year festival, will present a jugalbandi with Grammy Award nominated flautist Pt. Rano Majumder. Famous woman flautist Dr. Jayaprada Ramamurthy, popular khayaliya Shubha Mudgal and Shruti Sadolikar ; Dhrupadiya Wasifuddin Dagar will perform solos, led by legendary “singing violin of India” N. Rajam, three generation Carnatac violinists will diffuse melody; noted couple Raja and Radha Reddy will showcase Kuchipudi dance; two gems -- Irshad Khan [son of Ustad Imrat Khan] and Shujaat Khan [son of Ustad Vilayat Khan] -- of the same family with roots in Bangladesh will play Surbahar and sitar respectively; a new instrument to be baptized at the festival is Saraswati Veena, played by Jayanthi Kumaresh; Shubhayu Sen Majumdar will recite the almost extinct esraj.
South Indian artistes who previously stunned Dhaka music lovers with their vocal prowess, instrumental magic and visual poetry will come again this year. They include Oscar nominated artiste Bombay Jayashri, (Carnatic vocal); Bharatnatyam diva Alarmel Valli; Ganesh Rajagopalan and his brother Kumaresh (Jugalbandi Carnatic Violin); Karaikudi Mani (Mridangam).
Stalwarts of North Indian Classical Music who initiated this monumental music festival will, as always, set their footprint on the soil of Bangladesh and pour their melody on the country. They include Pt. Hariprasad Chaurasia, Pt. Shivkumar Sharma, Pt. Ajoy Chakrabarty; Pt. Suresh Talwalkar, Pt. Ulhas Kashalkar, Pt. Tejendra Narayan Majumdar, Ustad Rashid Khan, Pt. Uday Bhawalkar, Rahul Sharma, Kaushiki Chakrabarty and Sameehan Kashalkar.
Many Bangladeshi artistes and institutes will take part in group performances. Directed by Dr. Ashit Roy, eight students of Music Department of Rajshahi University will render vocal music; 22 dancers will perform in the inaugural dance show, directed by noted artiste and organiser Minu Billah; directed by Warda Rehab, 30 artistes will perform Manipuri dance; eight artistes of Sylhet will present Dhamar, directed by Animesh Bijoy Chowdhury; noted sarod artiste Yusuf Khan will perform solo; young artistes of Bengal Parampara Sangeetalay will participate in a group tabla recital; Susmita Debnath Suchi and Abhijit Kundu will perform vocal music on behalf of Bengal Parampara Sangeetalay.
