We bought kites or watched movies with Eidee - Raisul Islam Asad
A towering figure of Bangladesh media, Raisul Islam Asad has been acting for over four decades. Over his long career, he has put in powerful performances in TV plays and films. The veteran actor talked about his childhood Eid celebrations and more in a recent conversation with The Daily Star.
What was Eid like in your childhood?
Asad: I grew up in Old Dhaka. Our entire lane was just like a family. At Eid the bonds were even stronger; we could easily enter anyone's kitchen. It was a really fun time.
You must have eagerly anticipated the festival.
Asad: Oh, yes there was massive excitement! We were eight siblings and got new dresses on the occasion. Nasiruddin Yousuff Bacchu was our next door neighbour, he was one of a family of 10 brothers and sisters. As there was no boundary wall between the two homes, their excitement at getting new clothes spilled over to our house and vice versa.
What did you do with the Eidee you received?
Asad: At the time, a one taka note was very valuable sum for us. We would buy kites, or watch a movie at a cinema hall with the money.
What else was on the Eid itinerary back in those days?
Asad: In the evening, my friends and I would head out on our bicycles. I used to take my elder brother's bicycle without his permission but it got stolen one day. Apart from this, we used to go to Gulistan cinema hall to watch movies.
