“'Ami Khujechhi Tomaye Maa Go' was my turning point”
Close up 1 star Rashed secured sixth position at the music talent hunt in 2005, but his talent was recognised even earlier, when he became best vocalist at the Benson & Hedges Star Search 2003. But what he is best known for is a song called “Ami Khujechhi Tomaye Maa Go”, a moving tribute to a mother that became a massive hit. The singer recently looked back on the song in a recent talk with The Daily Star.
Tell us about the “Maa” song?
Rashed: I was one of 16 finalists in Close up 1-2005. As I moved on to the top 10 performers, each artiste had to sing a song written by country's leading lyricists. I was the last singer through the lottery system. Nolok was called before me. At that time, I sang the song and the jury was very impressed by my performance.
What's the song you usually get requests for when you perform on stage?
Rashed: “Ami Khujechhi Tomaye Maa Go” is by far and large the most requested song – whether I am performing on stage at home and abroad or television programmes. It has been written and composed by Asif Iqbal and composed by Sawkat Ali Emon. After securing sixth position at Close up 1, we performed stage shows in 14 states in the USA. We also performed in Canada. I got many requests for the song, and not much has changed till now.
What was your first album?
Rashed: “Feriwala” was brought out under the banner of Gangchil in 2007. Naquib Khan was the music director of my first solo album. The album won the hearts of music lovers.
What's your ultimate musical dream?
Rashed: Music is my life. I want to continue singing till my last days. I'm here today because of music, and I want to perform more such good songs.
