Tessa Thompson to play Whoopi Goldberg's daughter in “Furlough”
IFC Films has acquired US and Canadian distribution rights to the road trip comedy “Furlough”, starring Tessa Thompson and Melissa Leo, The Hollywood Reporter reports. Whoopi Goldberg plays Thompson's onscreen mother, and Anna Paquin, Edgar Ramirez and La La Anthony are also among the cast of the completed movie.
Directed by Laurie Collyer, the film stars Thompson as a woman who cares for her aging mother while working at a jail. She gets assigned to accompany a rowdy prisoner (Leo) on an emergency furlough to visit her dying mother, but the duo's trip goes haywire.
Barry Strugatz wrote the script, while Leo and DeerJen's Jen Gatien produced the film
Thompson most recently appeared in the hit Marvel threequel “Thor: Ragnarok” and made a strong impression as the warrior Valkyrie. Her upcoming movies include Alex Garland's drama “Annihilation” and Nia DaCosta's modern Western “Little Woods”, as well as Boots Riley's sci-fi comedy “Sorry to Bother You”, which is set to premiere at the Sundance Film Festival.
