Ancestors, Episode #1: Erosion and Emergence in Dhaka
“Ancestors: Erosion and Emergence”, the first episode of the multi-part public programme conceptualised as an interdisciplinary events platform of the Gujral Foundation project “My East is Your West” at the 56th Venice Biennale, was held in Dhaka on March 27 and 28.
On March 27, a seminar was held at Goethe Institut Dhaka. At the seminar, artist and researcher Nabil Ahmed engaged the geo-history of the Bengal Delta as well as the Asian Arsenic belt and its interactions with colonial legacy, ecological justice and developmental history. Architect Marina Tabassum discussed the impacts of geographic conditions, living tradition, and matrilineal society upon her architectural practice, and artist-filmmaker Eric presented his recent film “Letters to Max” investigating the question of statehood, political agency and the crisis of recognition through the prism of the stateless state of Abkhazia. “Letters to Max” was screened at Britto Arts Trust on March 27.
The second day included a workshop and master class for local artists, filmmakers and art students held in collaboration with Britto Arts Trust. The programme was conducted by Nabil Ahmed, Eric Baudelaire, Marina Tabassum, Taufiqur Rahman Khan, Natasha Ginwala, Reetu Sattar, Mahbubur Rahman and Molla Sagar.
