Another killing in 'shootout'
An alleged criminal was killed in a “shootout” with police in Sharsha upazila of Jessore early yesterday.
The dead, Anisur Rahman, 32, was son of Waziar Rahman of Baliadanga village of Satkhira Sadar upazila, said police.
Anis, who was accused in over a dozen criminal cases, was arrested on Friday night from Dhaka, said Ahmed Kabir, officer-in-charge of Sharsha Police Station.
Around 2:00am today, police of Satkhira Sadar and Sharsha jointly raided Bashatpur village in Sharsha to arrest Anis' accomplices and recover firearms. Sensing the presence of police, the criminals opened fire on cops. Police returned fire, triggering a “gunfight” between the law enforcers and the criminals.
During the gunfight, Anis was shot dead. Two police constables were also hurt by bullets, said police.
The body was taken to Jessore Medical College Hospital morgue for an autopsy.
At least 81 people were killed in “shootouts” with law enforcers across the country from January to June this year, according to Ain O Salish Kendra.
