'AL supporters' occupy 30 Feni centres
Supporters of ruling Awami League-backed candidates have occupied more than 30 out of 47 polling centres at Chhagalnaiya upazila in Feni.
Vote rigging and ballot stuffing at different centres marked the fifth phase of upazila election in the district, reports our correspondent.
The AL-men captured the centres and ousted the agents of other aspirants from the centres between 8:00am and 9:00am soon.
At Pathannagar Government Primary School, unidentified youths with firearms stamped 600 ballot papers around 3:30am, said the upazila election presiding officer Ahmed Ulla.
The miscreants also exploded crude bombs during the incident.
Ahmed said the ballot papers would be cancelled.
Voting has also been suspended at Anwara Begum Adorsha Balika Bidyalay polling centre in the upazila following alleged election manipulation and ballot stuffing, said Rashed Khan Chowdhury, inspector of Detective Branch.
Meanwhile, a union parishad member, Abdul High, also an agent of Jamaat-e-Islami-blessed vice-chairman aspirant Mujibur Rahman was detained from Pathannagar Contactor Masjid Madrassa polling centre as he was carrying seals and stamp-pads allegedly ‘to cast fake votes’.
Executive magistrate PKM Enamul Karim confirmed the incident, saying the detainee has been handed over to a mobile court.
Most of the polling centres, except from those of the Sadar upazila, witnessed a poor turnout of voters, reports our Feni correspondent after visiting 12 centres.
