AL-backed candidate wins Kaliakoir polls
Awami League-backed candidate Rezaul Karim Russel has won the chairman post of Kaliakoir upazila in Gazipur in the fourth phase of the upazila elections.
With the victory, the ruling AL has secured 53 chairman posts in the polls held yesterday in 91 upazilas of the country.
Habibur Rahman, assistant returning officer and upazila nirbahi officer, declared Russel elected unofficially around 3:00am today, reports our Gazipur correspondent.
Russel (motorcycle) received 55,187 votes defeating Helal Uddin (pen-Inkpot), who is affiliated with the BNP-led 19-party alliance and got 16,905 votes.
Jamaat-backed Harun-ur Rashid was elected vice-chairman in the upazila while BNP-blessed Nargis Akter won vice chairman post reserved for women.
BNP has secured 24 chairman posts, Jamaat five, Jatiya Party one and other political parties four in yesterday’s polls.
The AL favourites had been trailing the BNP-backed candidates in the first two phases of the polls but they had closed the gap in the third phase.
