Agitating transport workers attack easy bike drivers
Supporters and members of transport owners' association and transport workers union damaged about 20 easy bikes on Thakurgaon-Panchagarh highway between Thakurgaon Bus Stand and Bhulli Bazar in Sadar upazila yesterday afternoon.
During the attack, about 10 easy bike drivers and passengers were injured.
Thakurgaon transport owners' association and Thakurgaon transport workers' union jointly went on an indefinite strike on all routes in the district on Tuesday last, demanding a ban on plying of unauthorised vehicles.
As the ultimatum of the associations passed off on Sunday, 31 August Thakurgaon tank lorry workers union also joined the programme yesterday morning.
Hundreds of trucks, including goods-laden ones remained stranded on Thakurgaon-Dhaka highway while commuters in the district underwent untold sufferings due to the strike.
The three wheelers and easy bike drivers and owners alleged that the supporters of Thakurgaon transport owners and workers union were moving on trucks with sticks and iron rods under the nose of police and attacked them.
They also vandalised 20 battery-run easy bikes at different points of the highway, including Old Bus Stand, Salondar and Bhulli Bazar area at about 4:00pm to 5:00pm, they said.
