ACC to probe 6 bureaucrats for obtaining FF certificate
The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) today decided to open an investigation into five secretaries and a joint secretary who obtained Freedom Fighter Certificates over the last five years.
The ACC's move follows a report published in the daily Prothom Alo on January 22 stating 11,000 people including four incumbent and one retired secretary and a joint secretary obtained the certificate to extend their retirement age.
The practice of obtaining such certificate by public servants started after the government had increased retirement age of freedom fighters in government job by two years more than the regular service tenure.
ACC Commissioner Mohammad Shahabuddin told The Daily Star that they would probe the incidents of the government high officials mentioned in the news report.
"We have not enough manpower to probe all the 11,000 certificates issued over the last five years," he said. "We will initially investigate the certificates of those public officers whose names surfaced in the news."
The report mentioned names of Health Secretary Niaz Uddin, Liberation War Affairs Secretary KH Masud Siddiqui, Science and Technology Affairs Secretary AKM Amir Hossain, Housing and Public Works Affairs Secretary Khandaker Shawkat Hossain, Prime Minister's Former Secretary Mollah Waheduzzaman and Liberation War Affairs Joint Secretary Abul Kashem Talukdar.
Many doctors, engineers and teachers also obtained the certificate in the same way.
