ACC seeks Shajahan, Abbas’s statements on journo housing land
The Anti-Corruption Commission has sought statements from Shipping Minister Shajahan Khan and BNP leader Mirza Abbas in a case against ex-state minister for housing and public works Alamgir Kabir over allocation of a land to some journalists at a lower rate.
ACC Deputy Director Jatan Kumar Roy today sent the letters requesting the duo to appear before its headquarters in the capital on October 12 for giving their accounts.
The seven acres of land in Mirpur was allotted to Dhaka Journalists Cooperatives Limited during BNP-Jamaat government's tenure between 2001 and 2006 when Mirza Abbas was minister for the ministry while Alamgir was his deputy.
The land was earlier allegedly allotted to a cooperative--Jhilmil Bohumukhi Samabay Samity--in which Shajahan Khan was involved, said a top ACC official preferring anonymity.
ACC on March 6 filed the case with Shahbagh Police Station in the capital accusing Alamgir along with former deputy director Azaharul Haque and office assistant Matiar Rahman and cashier Mansur Alam of National Housing Authority (NHA).
According to the case statement, Alamgir Kabir sent a latter to the then prime minister in 2002 with a request for developing a housing area for journalists, writers, artists and cultural activists though they did not make any written requests for providing them with plots.
While the request to the then prime minister was under process, Alamgir directed the housing and public works secretary to allocate it from a previously developed land.
The NHA officials allocated the seven acres of land to Dhaka Journalists Co-operatives Limited at Tk 3.39 crore though the market value of the land was Tk 19 crore.
