Abahani clinched the Victory Day Hockey Tournament title for the second time when they handed a massive 7-1 goal defeat to Bangladesh Army in the final at the Maulana Bhasani Hockey Stadium yesterday.
Expectations were high about a close and entertaining contest between traditional powerhouse Abahani and Bangladesh Army, especially after the way the latter had dispatched giants Usha KC 5-2 in the semifinal. However, the Sky Blues turned the final into a one-way traffic scoring seven goals against the opposition whom they had beaten 4-1 in their group-stage encounter.
Abahani had to wait till the 21minute to break the deadlock when Ashraful Islam converted the second penalty corner before skipper Pushkor Khisa Mimo doubled the lead in the 31st minute.
Army adopted attacking strategy after resumption but Abahani played sensibly to cash in on the chances they created in counter-attacks.
Capitalising on such situations, Abahani scored five more goals in the second half to take the match away from Bangladesh Army, who conceded last three goals in as many minutes.
Man-of-the match Ashraful and Mimo found the back of the Army once again each while Khorshedur Rahman, Sheikh Mohammad Nannu and Hasan Jubair Niloy scored one goal each for Abahani. Milon Hossain scored a consolation goal for Army.
