9 DUET Shibir men sent to jail
Nine activists of Islami Chhatra Shibir Dhaka University of Engineering & Technology (DUET) unit were sent to jail yesterday on charges of plotting subversive activities in the Kazi Nazrul Islam Hall.
The detainees are Abdullah Al Mamun, president of Shibir DUET unit, and activists Saidur Rahman, Shahinur Rahman, Alamin Hawlader, Mijanur Rahman, Abdullah Al Mamun, Iqbal Hossain, Raju Ahmed, and Mahmudul Hasan, director of local Optimum Coaching Centre.Provost of the dormitory, Kamruzzaman, said some 13 Shibir activists along with their former leaders and some outsiders were holding a meeting in room no -1009 when a BCL group attacked them with sticks on Monday night. Within a short while, the provost reached the spot and locked the Shibir activists in a guest room to “rescue them from the BCL attack”.
Then, he handed the Shibir activists to police “to ensure their safety”.
Later, the BCL activists torched mattresses and laptops which were in the room, he added.
Denying any incident of beating Shibir activists or torching, Sakib Reza Chowdhury, vice president of BCL DUET unit, said they only informed teachers and the provost about a debate that was being arranged by the Shibir activists on “the prime minister being an atheist or a theist”.
Mohsin Uddin, general secretary of Shibir DUET Civil Faculty unit, claimed that they were only discussing their organisatinal activities. BCL activists launched the attack in the room as well as in nearby rooms in front of teachers because they wanted to postpone the last semester final exam scheduled for May 18 as they have a programme on the preceding day, he added. They also alleged that BCL leaders wanted to prove their dominance on the campus through the attacks.
Police said they found some evidence of plotting subversive activities by the Shibir activists.
