8 held for making counterfeit notes in Dhaka
Detectives detained eight members of a gang including their ringleader for producing fake currency and seized counterfeit notes of around Tk 50 lakh in Bashabo of Dhaka.
The arrestees are Abul Khair, Azizul Haque, Sohel Rana, Shah Alam, Mohammad Shohag, Shahidul Islam, Yasin Arafat and Shohag Masud. Khair was a ringleader of the gang, said the Detective Branch of police (DB) today.
A DB team, led by assistant commissioner Mahmud Naser, nabbed Mohammad Shohag and Shah Alam, launching a raid at a motorbike garage at Bashabo around 5:30pm on Wednesday and seized 194 counterfeit notes of Tk 1000 from their possessions, said Monirul Islam, joint commissioner of Dhaka Metropolitan Police, at a press briefing at the DMP media centre.
Later, on the basis of the information acquired in primary interrogation, the DB team also raided Khair’s rented flat in North Bashabo and caught red him and his five associates while making fake currencies, the DMP official added.
Police also seized fake currency making papers, 12 frames, five laptops, three printers and others equipment from there.
During the primary interrogation, Khair confessed that he had been involved in making fake currencies over the last seven years, Monirul said.
Around 30 to 35 persons are involved in fake currency making and promoting business in Dhaka, the police official claimed.
