651 Nilphamari Jamaat men sued for polls violence
At least 651 Jamaat-Shibir men were sued today and last night on charges of arson attack on polling centres, snatching ballot papers and assaulting election officials in Jaldhaka upazila of Nilphamari.
Five separate cases were filed for the violence that was reported from four polling centres of the upazila (Nilphamari-3 constituency), reports our correspondent.
In the case statements, the names of 21 leaders and activists of Jamaat-e-Islami and its student wing, Islami Chhatra Shibir, were mentioned while others remain unnamed.
Presiding officers of the five polling centres-- Pashchim Golmunda Brahmanpara Registered Primary School, Kathali Union Parishad Govt Primary School, South Deshibai Govt Primary School, Deshibai Kachari Govt Primary School and Bogulagari Baroghariapara Govt Primary School centre-- lodged the cases with Jaldhaka Police Station, said Sekander Ali, the upazila election officer.
Police arrested a Shibir activist, an accused one of the cases, from Balapara Kachari village last night, the police official said.
