6 JCD men held at DU
Police detained six activists of Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD), the student wing of BNP, from Dhaka University campus today when they tried to bring out procession in support of the countrywide hartal (shutdown) enforced by BNP-led 20-party alliance.
The 20-party combine enforced the daylong hartal from 6:00am protesting the 16th constitutional amendment that empowered parliament to impeach Supreme Court judges for misbehaviour and incapacity.
Meanwhile, members of Detective Branch of Police detain four activists of JCD from in front of BNP Nayapaltan party headquarters while the men were trying to enter the office around 11:00.
The activists of Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL), the student wing of ruling Awami League, caught the JCD men from in front of Rokeya Hall and Ekushey Hall between 6:30am and 8:00am.
On information, police rushed to the spots and picked up the activists, said Abu Zafar, a sub-inspector of Shahbagh Police Station.
The JCD men were caught when they tried to bring out processions there supporting the hartal, the police official told The Daily Star Online.
Identities of the detainees could not be known immediately.
Though the alliance enforced the hartal from this morning, the country is in the grip of 36-hour shutdown, as Jamaat-e-Islami observed a 24-hour hartal across the country that ended at 6:00am today.
Jamaat called the strike protesting a Supreme Court verdict that sentenced its Nayeb-e-Ameer Delawar Hossain Sayedee to imprisonment until death.
