55 UK Muslim charities under scanner for extremism link
Two NGOs operating in Bangladesh are among 55 British Muslim charities which the Charity Commission of the UK secretly is monitoring suspecting they might have link with extremism, reports Bangla daily Prothom Alo.
The daily, quoting report revealed by think tank Claystone, names the two NGOs as Muslim Aid and Aid Convoy.
Claystone collected the watch list under the right to information act.
The Claystone report said that the Charity Commission on December 5, 2012 launched a code named ‘redicalisation and extremism’ to monitor the organisational activities of different charities.
Till May 8 this year, the commission includes the 55 Muslim charities under the ‘redicalisation and extremism’ code.
The commission secretly monitored the activities of the charities, the report said.
The commission also launched investigation into the five charities including the Aid Convoy. The other four charities which operating activities in Syria are -- Al Fatiha Global, Children in Need, Human Aid and Syria Aid.
The names of Aid Convoy and Muslim Aid came in the watch list on August 30 last year and November 20 the same year respectively. Since then the UK Charity Commission has been continuing the investigation in the activities of the two charities.
However, the commission did not give any explanation about its investigation against the two charities.
Meanwhile, Muslim charities criticised the Claystone and alleged that the charities have been being harassed in many way after a new chairman took charge of the Charity Commission.
