5 hurt in Gonojagoron Mancha factional clash
At least five people including Imran H Sarker were injured as two factions of Gonojagoron Mancha clashed at Shahbagh in the capital city of Dhaka this evening.
Imran, spokesperson of a faction, and other injured were admitted to Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) around 7:00pm, said Haider Ali, assistant sub-inspector of DMCH police camp.
The clash began around 6:00pm when the groups criticised each other from their rallies in front of the National Museum.
The factions – led by Imran and Kamal Pasha Chowdhury – have been staging demonstrations demanding the Supreme Court verdict that commuted death penalty of Jamaat-e-Islami leader Delawar Hossain Sayedee.
Meanwhile, a third faction, headed by Bangladesh Chhatra Moitree President Bappaditya Basu, held a separate rally at Shahbagh at the same time today.
Imran-led faction tried to bring out a procession and march towards Shahbagh crossing following its rally. Police however foiled the attempt.
Being intercepted, Imran and the activists of his group returned to their rally venue when the activists of Kamal Pasha-led group reportedly began throwing plastic chairs at Imran-led group, triggering chase and counter-chase between the factions.
Police however brought the situation under control around half-an-hour later, reports our correspondent from the spot.
The youth-led Mancha split over establishing supremacy, allegation of fund embezzlement and “undemocratic” practices by Imran.
Kamal Pasha Chowdhury, one of the pro-Awami League activists, on April 12 this year, “relived” Imran at a press conference.
