5 women die in Mymensingh boat capsize

At least five women have died in a boat capsize in a water body in Phulbaria upazila of Mymensingh.

The victims are Rina Akhtar, 28, Shahara Khatun, 26, Sajeda Begum, 25, Rawshan Ara, 24, indigenous girl Sumitra Sangma, 12. All hailed from Hatilate village in the upazila, reports our Mymensingh correspondent.

Police said the boat sank in Borobeela Beel when the victims along with others were returning home after collecting VGF rice from Babuganj Bazar in Phulbaira this afternoon.

Five of them drowned while the others managed to swim to safety, said Anwar Hossain Bhuiyan, officer-in-charge of Phulbaria Police Station.

Police could not confirm whether any passenger is still missing in the incident, said the OC.

“We are conducting rescue operation in the water body,” the police official added.
