5 dead, 5 missing in Barguna vessel capsize
A vessel carrying over 200 passengers capsized on the Paira River in Taltali upazila in Barguna today, leaving at least five people, including a minor, dead and five missing.
The deceased are Nayeem, 9, Zainul, 50, Ameer Ali, Yusuf Majhi, and Shafi Uddin, Superintended of Police (SP) Saiful Islam of Barguna informed, adding that Ameer, Yusuf and Shafi were over 50 years old.
Coast Guard members recovered the floating bodies around 5:00pm, Babul Akter, officer-in-charge of Taltoli Police Station, told The Daily Star.
The OC also said rescue operation was underway.
The incident took place in the southern coastal district of Bangladesh, about 175km from the capital, around 1:00pm, reports our Patuakhali correspondent.
At least five passengers were still missing till filing the report around, while others managed to swim ashore.
The vessel carrying devotes from Kuakata was heading for Barguna to attend a religious festival at Chalabhanga darbar sharif, our correspondent said.
Meanwhile, Mohammad Zahirul Islam, deputy commissioner of the district, distributed Tk 5,000 for each victim on behalf of the district administration. The money was given to the relatives of the deceased, who came to receive the bodies.
