48-hr hartal from Monday
The BNP-led 18-party opposition alliance has called a two-day countrywide hartal from Monday morning demanding cancellation of Sunday's parliamentary election results.
The alliance will enforce the shutdown from 6:00am Monday to 6:00am Wednesday alongside the ongoing indefinite blockade of rail, roads and waterways across the country.
Osman Faruq, an adviser to BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia, announced the fresh agitation programme from a press briefing at his Gulshan residence this evening.
Two hours after the polling in the 10th parliamentary election came to an end at 4:00pm, the former education minister said the opposition's movement has brought victory for the people and the democracy of the country.
"The countrymen have hatefully rejected the calls by the prime minister and her cabinet colleagues to go to polling centres and cast their votes," Faruq said.
He added that people did not go to voting centres and did not cast their votes.
"The government has entirely been detached from people and they have no support for this administration."
The BNP leader alleged that the government wants to remain in power by carrying out oppression and torture on people by ruling party hooligans and law enforcers.
The fall of the autocratic and undemocratic government is certain, he added.
"The very low turnout has strengthened their demand for a non-party caretaker government," observed Faruq.
He demanded that the government quit immediate and hand over power to a non-party administration.
The BNP leader called upon the government to sit for a dialogue immediately on holding a free, fair and inclusive election under a non-party arrangement.
