Flood water flows 99cm above danger level, 1 lakh people affected

Some 100 villages have gone under water as a flood control embankment in Shariakandi upazila of Bogra collapsed in the rushing waters of the Jamuna River on Friday.
Lives of around one lakh people have been affected badly following the collapse about 300 metres of the embankment.
At least 100 villages of Kamalpur, Kutubpur, Chandanbaisha and Velabari unions of the upazila were flooded afresh following the collapse of the embankment, said Nurul Islam Sarkar, executive engineer of Water Development Board (WDB) in Bogra.
The water of Jamuna River is still flowing 99cm above the danger level at Shariakandi point. Villagers of the five upazilas -- Sonatola, Sariakandi, Dhunut, Gabtoli and Sherpur -- in Bogra will be the worst sufferers if it is continued, the WDB official said.
Local lawmaker Abdul Mannan provided 13 boats for rescuing the flood affected people. Government high officials also visited the area.
Rajshahi Divisional Commissioner Helal Uddin Ahmad visited the flood affected areas at around 11:00am.
He is scheduled to meet the journalists at Bogra Circuit House at 5:00pm to inform the latest flood situation and government measures to rescue the flood affected people, said Bogra District Administration ADC (general) Khorshed Alam.


The ADC said around 95 metric tones of rice and Tk 1.75 lakh have already been distributed among the flood affected people of Shariakandi upazila while around 60 metric tones of rice and Tk 1.25 lakh have been distributed among the people of Dhunat areas.  
Majeda Yesmin, upazila nirbahi officer (UNO) of Shariakandi, said the whole area is now under the army vigilance. And they will be deployed in the area if necessary.
