4 drown, 10 missing in Sirajganj boat capsize
Four people were confirmed dead and at least 10 went missing after a boat capsized in the Jamuna river in Chowhali upazila of Sirajganj this morning.
Strong current caused the capsize around 11:00am, Md Samsul Haque, officer-in-charge of Chowhali Police Station, told our Pabna correspondent.
The motorboat carrying 70 to 75 passengers was bound for Char Salimabad from Michuani Char, reports our Pabna correspondent.
When it reached near Baguchia point in the river, it flipped due to strong current, added Haque.
Many of the passengers managed to swim ashore.
On information, police and locals rushed there and recovered two bodies from the river near Baguchia point around 11:30am.
Three hours later, they recovered two more bodies from the same spot, said Abul Kahar Siddiqui, chairman of Bagutia union parishad of the upazila.
At least 10 people were missing till filing this report around 3:00pm.
The deceased Nayan Tara, 50, Ilu Begum, 28, Anguri Khatun and Rashida Khatun, 15, were residents of Char Salimabad and Michuani Char villages of the upazila.
Rescue operation was on till filing of the report.
