4 die as Gopalganj house set on fire
Four people including two children were killed as miscreants allegedly set fire to a tin-shed room of a house in Gopalganj Sadar upazila last night.
Police picked up nine people suspecting their link with the fire incident, reports our Gopalganj correspondent.
The deceased were identified as Huriya Begum, 65, her grandsons Aminur Sardar, 14, and Tamim Fakir, 8, and granddaughter Tanima, 6.
Quoting locals, our Gopalganj correspondent said the fire broke out at the house in Dumdia village around 11:00pm when the four were asleep in the room.
The neighbours rushed to the spot and doused the blaze after one and a half hours of efforts.
Later, they recovered the bodies of Huriya, Aminur and Tamim from the charred house and rescued Tanima in critical condition.
Tanima succumbed to her injuries at Gopalganj Sadar Hospital.
Informed by locals, a police team led by Gopalganj Superintendent of Police Mizanur Rahman visited the spot and held nine people in this connection, the SP said.
Police and locals suspected that Azad Mollah, son-in-law of victim Huriya, might have link with the incident.
Sharifa Begum, wife of Azad and daughter of Huriya, blamed her husband for the incident.
She told The Daily Star that there was a longstanding conflict between Sharifa and her husband as he got married for the second time without taking her consent.
“I started living at the house of my mother after his marriage. Three days ago, my husband came here to take me home but I refused,” she said.
Then, he threatened that he would set my mother’s house on fire, she added.
All the deceased are nephews and niece of Sharifa.
