31 activists sent to jail
A Sylhet court yesterday sent 31 activists of Sylhet city unit of Bangladesh Chhatra League to jail in connection with a factional clash at Shahjalal University of Science and Technology (SUST) on Thursday that left one person dead and 20 others injured.
Sylhet Kotwali police and Jalalabad police arrested the activists in 22 raids on Friday and yesterday. The law enforcers also recovered one revolver and 20 machetes.
So far, three cases have been filed regarding the incident -- one by Sust Registrar Md Ishfaqul Hossain, one by mother of Sumon Chandra Das, who was shot dead in the clash, and one by police.
Police and Ishfaqul Hossain filed the cases against 250 unnamed people, while Das's mother against 120 unnamed people.
Meanwhile, the three-member committee formed by the university syndicate is yet to start its investigation, said Sust Treasurer Prof Ilias Uddin Biswas who is leading the team.
