3 'thieves' beaten dead in Gazipur

A mob beat to death three suspected thieves at Sripur in Gazipur early today, police said.

Police identified one of the deceased as Nurul Islam, 27, son of one Abul Hossain of Sohadia village of Sripur upazila. Identities of the rest two could not be known immediately.

Mohsinul Quadir, officer-in-charge of Sripur Police Station, said the three were preparing to snatch a motorcycle at Shilashwar village of the upazila around 3:00am.

Sensing their attempts, locals chased them. They managed to catch them in adjacent Sohadia village.

The angry mob gave the three a good beating, leaving them dead on the spot.

On information, police recovered their bodies and sent those to the Gazipur Sadar Hospital for autopsy.

Deceased Nurul Islam was an accused in the murder of one Jasim Uddin, 22,  one and half months ago, Mohsinul Quadir said.

Talking to The Daily Star, Nurul's mother Nurza Begum claimed that her son was killed as part of a plan to avenge the killing of Jasim Uddin.
