3 robbers killed in Sundarbans 'gunfight'
Three robbers were killed in a gunfight with the members of Rapid Action Battalion in the Sundarbans under Sharankhola range of Bagerhat this morning.
Two of the dead were identified as Qader alias Baro Bhai and Kalyan (full names were not known), reports our Bagerhat correspondent.
The victims were members of a robber gang, locally known as 'Shirshabahini', said Major Anwarul Kabir, deputy commander of Rab-8.
A team of the elite force conducted a raid in Sharankhola range around 9:30am after receiving information that a gang of robbers had taken position there, Maj Kabir, who led the drive, said.
As they reached near Tambulbunia Lake, the robbers saw them from a watch tower, the Rab official said.
Sensing danger, the robbers opened fire targeting the elite force members prompting them to fire back that triggered the gunfight, he added.
Three of them came in line of the fire and died on the spot during the 30-minute gunfight while their cohorts managed to flee the scene, Maj Kabir said.
Rab men fired around 60 rounds of bullets during the gunfight while the robbers responded with 200 to 250 bullets.
The Rab members recovered 16 firearms and 337 rounds of bullets from the spot after the gunfight.
