3 killed in Barisal firebombing, 2 held
Three people including a trucker and his father-in-law were killed after alleged blockaders firebombed a truck in Gournadi upazila of Barisal early today.
This firebombing took place hours after the grisly arson attack on a passenger bus in Gaibandha where five people were burnt to death and 30 others were injured.
Pro-blockaders allegedly hurled a petrol bomb at the poultry feed-laden truck in Mahilara area around 5:15am, Barisal correspondent reports quoting Sajjad Hossain, officer-in-charge (OC) of Gournadi Police Station.
The trucker, Ijaeydul Islam, 35, of Badarpur in Sadar upazila; his father-in-law Motaleb Sheikh, 65, a resident of Tambulkhana Bangdoba in Faridpur and truck help Munnu Mia, 45, dead on the spot, the OC said.
Motaleb boarded the truck to visit Ijaeydul’s house in Barisal, said Shohidul Islam, brother of killed truck-driver Ijaeydul.
Ripon Mia, the owner of the truck, said the poultry-feed truck heading for Barisal from Bagher Bazaar of Gazipur hit a roadside-tree when it came under the attacked.
Firefighters with the help of police and locals, extinguished the flame and rescued three people who suffered serious burn injuries after the attack.
The trio were declared “brought dead” when they were taken to Gournadi Upazila Health Complex.
The bodies were sent to Barisal Sher-E-Bangla Medical College Hospital for autopsy, police said.
Humayun Kabir, deputy inspector general of police in Barisal, said two suspected arsonists were detained in drives.
Police were conducting a drive to arrest the attackers, AKM Ehsan Ullah, superintendent of Barisal police, told the correspondent after visiting the spot.
Alhaj Abul Hasanat Abdullah, local Awami League lawmaker and former chief whip after visiting the spot, said BNP-Jamaat led terrorists engaged in a war against innocent and peace-loving people.
He ordered immediate arrest of those involved in the alleged killings.
