3 hurt as escorted truck convoy attacked in Rajshahi
At least three people suffered splinter injuries as alleged blockaders attacked a convoy of goods-carrying trucks in Rajshahi city this afternoon.
Some 10 masked blockaders attacked a convoy of some 25 Dhaka bound goods-laden trucks from Chapainawabganj in Dorikhorbona area around 1:00pm while members of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB), police and Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) were escorting the vehicles, said witnesses and police.
Two of the injured -- Masem Sheikh, 40, his brother Kajin Sheikh, 28, both employees at Uttoron Printing Press in the city -- were admitted to Rajshahi Medical College Hospital with splinter injuries on their ear and hands respectively, said Iftekhair Alam, assistant commissioner of Rajshahi Metropolitan Police.
While pedestrian Abdur Rashid, 38, received splinter injuries on his right leg and took first aid from the hospital, the police official added.
The attackers blasted nearly 10 crude bombs and a petrol bomb on the trucks that were on the middle of the convoy.
The windshield of a truck was damaged and all the trucks managed to speed away safely.
One of the crude bombs was blasted inside the printing press and left the two employees injured. The shutter and glass walls of the press were damaged.
The pedestrian was hurt as a crude bomb was blasted on the body of a truck, witnesses said.
The attackers also vandalised two tea stalls and torched chairs of Asha Saloon at Dorikhorbona intersection while fleeing the scene before the police reached there.
The law enforcers could not arrest anyone in connection with the attack, although the police suspected roles of Islami Chhatra Shibir behind the attack.
“There are none but Shibir activists who are creating obstacles on roads, so we are conducting raids targeting notorious Shibir cadres,” said Alam.
