3 cops held in city, 149 gold bars seized
Detectives detained four people including three policemen for misappropriating smuggled gold in the capital's Rampura area and recovered 149 gold bars from three districts.
Detective Branch (DB) of Police detained the three policemen -- Manjurul Islam, a sub-inspector (SI), two constables Wahid and Akash (whose full name could not be known immediately) of Rampura Police Station -- in different areas of the capital last night.
The other detainee is a police source named Rana, said Monirul Islam, joint commissioner of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP).
The 149 gold bars were recovered in separate raids in Gazipur, Bogra and Narayanganj last night, he said.
Earlier, two police officials -- the officer-in-charge (OC) and OC (investigation) -- of Rampura Police Station were closed on March 19 three days after they allegedly hid information regarding recovery of the illegal gold bars.
Of the seized gold bars, 58 were found at SI Monjurul's residence in Narayanganj while other 63 recovered at Wahid's house in Bogra, Monirul said at a press briefing at DMP media centre in the city.
Twenty eight gold bars were seized from Constable Akash's father-in-law residence in Kaliakoir and Rana's house in Tongi upazila of Gazipur.
Sixteen bars are yet to be recovered, he added.
They were detained in connection with a gold recovery on March 15 at Rampura in the city.
Rampura OC (investigation) Nasim Ahmed on March 15 said police patrol team seized 70 gold bars weighing around 8.75 kilograms and arrested two persons in Rampura.
However, police sources claimed a team of Rampura police led by Sub-inspector Majurul Alam seized 235 gold bars on March 13 in Balur Math area.
They seized the bars from a private car and informed the incident to the high-ups at the police station. Later, the OCs deliberately hid the information about 165 bars and showed the date of the incident as March 15, police sources claimed.
The hidden information came to light following disputes regarding distribution of the bars among them, added the sources.
