2yr jail for child marriage
The cabinet today approved in principle a new law on child marriage incorporating a provision of up to two-year imprisonment and Tk 50,000 fine to the grooms, marriage registers and parents involved in the act.
Approval to the Child Marriage Prevention Act 2014 came at a regular meeting of cabinet with Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in the chair.
If the offender happens to be a woman, she will not have to serve in jail. Such offenders will have to pay the fine only.
The existing law which dates back to 1929 can only punish the grooms and has the provision of one month of imprisonment and Tk 1,000 fine.
