29 Bangladesh missions fail to reach export goals
Twenty-nine out of 53 Bangladesh missions abroad have failed to achieve their respective export targets for the first half of the current fiscal year.
Some key Bangladesh missions like the ones in Washington, Berlin, London, Paris, Madrid, Ottawa, Rome and the Hague have failed to achieve their July-December export targets. However, important missions in Stockholm, Dubai, Riyadh, Canberra and New Delhi reached their targets.
The overall export earnings for the period amounted to US$14,914.21 million against the target of US$15,604.00 million, showing a 4.42 percent shortfall, according to the latest statistics of the Export Promotion Bureau (EPB).
The 24 missions that are doing well are in Stockholm, Canberra, New Delhi, Dubai, Riyadh, Brasilia, Mexico City, Geneva, Pretoria, Lisbon, Tehran, Cairo, Islamabad, Manila, Muscat, Yangon, Nairobi, Tashkent, Kathmandu, Rabat, Manama, Thimpu, Malé and Baghdad.
Of the missions that could not achieve their targets, 13 of them saw a rise in export from the corresponding period in the last fiscal year. These missions are in Berlin, London, Madrid, Paris, Hanoi, Rome, Brussels, Beijing, Tokyo, Singapore, Athens, Moscow and Kuala Lumpur.
The remaining ones -- in Washington, Ottawa, The Hague, Ankara, Seoul, Hong Kong, Jakarta, Bangkok, Kuwait, Colombo, Amman, Beirut, Doha, Port Luis, Brunei and Tripoli -- saw a decline.
The EPB figures revealed that out of 17 Bangladesh missions having commercial wings, only six have achieved their export targets. The missions are in Canberra, New Delhi, Geneva, Dubai, Yangon and Tehran.
The mission in Washington registered the highest earnings -- some US$2,697.68 million --, almost one fifth of the total earnings. The mission in Berlin and London had second and third highest earnings with US$2,490.43 million and US$1,556.72 million respectively.
The fourth highest mission is in Madrid with US$812.86 million earnings. The next was the Bangladesh mission in Italy, which earned almost US$680.90 million.
