27 bullet-hit as villagers clash in Natore
At least 30 people were injured, 27 of them by gunshots, as two groups of villagers exchanged bullets in the district's Singra upazila yesterday morning.
Of the injured, three are undergoing treatment at Rajshahi Medical College Hospital. Their condition is critical. The other injured are receiving treatment at Singra Upazila Health Complex.
Abul Kalam Azad, chairman of Dahia Union Parishad, said there was a conflict between Saiful Islam and Amjad Mollah in Berabari village over catching fish in Chalan Beel, the largest wetland of Bangladesh. They were said to be supporters of the ruling Awami League.
Following the conflict, supporters of Saiful surrounded Amjad's house around 8:00am and started firing indiscriminately. Followers of Amjad also returned fire. The fight left 30 people of both the sides injured, said Munshi Sahabuddin, additional superintendent of police in Natore.
On information, police from Singra and Natore district town rushed to the spot and brought the situation under control, he said.
Saiful and his supporter Danesh Ali were detained later, and a firearm was recovered from their possession.
Additional police were deployed in the village to fend off further trouble, the police official added.
