241 held in 4 districts
Joint forces and police detained 241 people including 144 opposition leaders and activists conducting overnight drives in Chittagong, Comilla, Tangail and Bogra on different charges.
Of them, 97 people were rounded up from several trains in Tangail, 33 BNP-Jamaat-Shibir men detained from 16 upazilas of Comilla, 40 from 11 upazilas in Bogra and 71 from Chittagong, reports our district correspondents quoting police.
Earlier yesterday, police and joint forces picked up at least 360 people including opposition activists across the country.
TANGAIL
Police detained 97 people raiding two Dhaka-bound trains at Gharinda Railway Station in Sadar upazila of Tangail.
Acting on information that alleged miscreants may go to capital en masses to commit subversive activities, law enforcers conducted the drives and detained them, said Saleh Mohammed Tanvir, superintendent of police (SP) in Tangail.
The detention was made from midnight to till 10:00am, the SP added.
Police were interrogating the detainees when this report was filed around 11:30am.
COMILLA
Law enforcers picked up 33 opposition leaders and activists after 12:00am conducting raids in all 16 upazilas, said Ali Ashraf Bhuiyan, additional superintendent of police in Comilla.
Of the detainees, 14 are from BNP while the others are leaders and activists of its key ally Jamaat-e-Islami and its student wing Islami Chhatra Shibir, he said.
BOGRA
District police have arrested 40 opposition men on charges of recent sabotage, vandalism and arson attacks.
Gaziur Rahman, assistant superintendent of police (Sadar and Media) of Bogra, said police arrested the 18-party men through overnight drives in 11 upazilas except one, Shariakandi upazila.
Activists of 18-party were rounded up for sabotaging railway lines, vandalising and torching vehicles, residences of the Awami League men and government offices and police stations from March 03, the police official said.
CHITTAGONG
Joint force conducting overnight drives in different areas of the district detained 71 activists of BNP-Jamaat-Shibir in connection with recent sabotage in the district.
Of the arrestees, 35 opposition men were arrested form metropolitan area while the others from different upazilas, said Banaj Kumar Majumder, assistant commissioner of Chittagong Metropolitan Police and Hafiz Akter, superintendent of police in Chittagong.
