None barred from relief activities

Adviser for Agriculture, Fisheries and Livestock Dr CS Karim yesterday said none has been barred from conducting relief activities just because of their political or any other identities."People from all walks of life are taking part in the relief distribution activities spontaneously and none has been barred so far," he said while briefing newsmen on the overall flood situation at Press Information Department auditorium in the city. The government does not want to hide anything as it believes in transparency, he told the newsmen adding necessary steps would be taken promptly if there was any news of not reaching relief goods in any affected area. Dr Karim said the rescue operation had taken place timely and no case of delay was reported so far. Adequate numbers of medical teams endowed with necessary medicines are working in the flood-hit areas round the clock, he added. Detailing the post flood rehabilitation works, the adviser said the government had already allocated Tk 65 crore for the marginal farmers. This money will not be disbursed in cash but will be in the form of agricultural inputs and products and a high-powered committee would oversee the distribution process, he spelled out the modalities of the distribution. Earlier, Squadron Leader Zahid of Armed Forces Division gave a brief resume of the latest overall flood situation. He said the situation would continue to improve in next 24 to 48 hours across the affected areas, including Dhaka and its adjoining places. A total of 92,14,260 people were affected while standing crops on 11,67,517 acres of land, 691 kilometres embankments, 18,778 kilometres of roads, 900 bridges and culverts and 7,91,716 houses were damaged. Besides, 3,42,792 people have taken refuge at 1,326 flood shelter centers and 226 people died of flood related reasons so far, he added.
