4 killed in road crashes

Four people were killed and 22 others injured in separate road accidents in Dhaka, Satkhira and Faridpur yesterday. UNB reports: A grocery owner was crushed to death under the wheels of a bus at Pallabi in the city yesterday morning. The victim was identified as Belayet Hossain Manik, 30. Police said Belayet was going to his shop at Mollah Market in the area at about 8:00am when the bus ran over him at Mirpur-12 bus stand, leaving him critically injured. He was rushed to Dhaka Medical College Hospital where attending doctors declared him dead. A case was filed with Pallabi Police Station. Our Correspondent in Satkhira adds: Two people were killed and 10 others injured, three of them seriously, in two separate road accidents. The dead were identified as Abu Daud Gazi, 30, son of Golam Bari Gazi of Jabakhali in Shyamnagar, and Amena Begum, 70, wife of Samsur Rahman of Pachcha village in Keshabpur, Jessore. Quoting local people, the police said a Satkhira-bound pick-up carrying fish traders from Khulna fell into a ditch at Binerpota in the morning, leaving Abu Daud dead on the spot and ten other fishermen injured. The fish traders were returning home after selling fish in Khulna, police said. In the other accident, a Satkhira-bound bus from Khulna ran over Amena Begum while she was crossing the road at Madanpur bazar in Tala. She died on the way to Satkhira hospital. Amena Begum came to her relative's house at Madanpur on Wednesday. A correspondent in Faridpur reports: A driver of an auto-tempo was killed in a collision between a bus and his vehicle at Maligram in Bhanga on Dhaka-Khulana Bishwa road at about 6:00am. According to the police, the Khulna-bound bus of Swarna Paribahan collided head-on with the auto-tempo, killing the driver and injuring 12 others. The injured passengers of the auto-tempo and the bus were admitted to Bhanga hospital.
