RU authorities prevent relief collection drive
RU Correspondent
Several voluntary and non-political organisations of students of Rajshahi University (RU) yesterday alleged that the university authorities and the police jointly forced them to stop their relief collection campaign for flood victims on the campus. Leaders of the organisations said they set up relief camps at many points on the campus, but Proctor Enamul Haque and the police jointly launched a crackdown and took away their banners and relief collection boxes yesterday morning. The organisations included Badhan, Rotaract Club, Ovipsha, Charan and Amra Sirajganjbashi. They set up relief camps as Vice Chancellor Prof Altaf Hossain in a statement on August 07 urged teachers and students to extend their support to flood-affected people, said Israt Zahan, a member of Ovipsha, at a press conference. Islami Chhatra Shibir activists also prevented them from collecting donations from the students at the residential halls, the leaders of the organisations said. They added that Shibir workers also told them that only Shibir will collect donations under their own banner. Mamunur Rashid, Barna, Tarana, Tanzina, Hedayetul Islam, Partha, Mahmud and Badhan were also present at the press conference. When contacted, Proctor Enamul Haque said no organisations can collect donations without permission from the police commissioner.
