Fresh case filed against 23 UK, Sylhet AL men detained in May

Sylhet Kotwali police yesterday filed a fresh case against 23 Awami League (AL) leaders, who were detained while attending a party in city's Bateshwar area on May 14 this year. Police said the fresh case was filed against them under Special Powers Act of 1974 for violating emergency regulations and hatching conspiracy against the state. The joint forces detained 23 AL leaders along with 17 party activists on charge of violating ban on political activities under emergency rule while they were attending a party on invitation of Shafiqur Rahman Chowdhury, joint secretary of AL UK unit, at a house in city's Bateshwar area. A case was filed against them on the same day. Of them, nine AL leaders of its UK unit are on bail while the rest are behind bars. The accused in the fresh case are Joint Secretary of AL UK unit Shafiqur Rahman Chowdhury, Sylhet city AL General Secretary Misbah Uddin Siraj, Ward Commissioner and city AL Joint Secretary Abdul Khalique, city Chhatra League Convener Habibur Rahman Selim, district Chhatra League chief Zaglu Chowdhury, former General Secretary of Chhatra League Nasir Uddin Chowdhury, AL UK unit Joint Secretary Syed Abul Quashem, AL Canada unit Convener Sarwar Hossain, AL UK unit activists Syed Sajidur Faruque, Mujahid Ali Sohel, Arun Uday Paul, Abdur Rahim, Abu sayeed Chwodhury, Faruque Chowdhury, Yahiya Ahmed, Sylhet city AL activist Prince Sadruzzaman, city Juba League Convener Syed Shamim Ahmed and Joint Convener Asaduzzaman, MC college Chhatra League General secretary Saiful Alam Tipu, Yousuf Ali, Juba League leader Ajoy Dev, Osmani Nagar Chhatra League chief Selim Reza and Shamsul Islam Milon.
