Advisers' council ask ministries to plan post-flood rehabilitation

The council of advisers yesterday asked the ministries concerned to do advance planning for post-flood rehabilitation operation and introduce VGF card immediately to feed the distressed people of the worst affected northern districts.A meeting of the council of advisers issued the directive as the advisers, who visited the flood- affected areas after they were assigned to monitor the respective districts, apprised the meeting of their firsthand experiences. The advisory council meeting stressed on advance preparation for post-flood rehabilitation, employment generation, prevention of flood-related diseases including diarrhea, advance supply of seeds to farmers to cope with colossal crop damage by the floods, which is the worst in a decade. It also emphasised smooth and systematic coordination in relief operation to avoid any duplication in the relief activities and proper utilisation of funds for people including in buying baby foods. Chaired by Chief Adviser Fakhruddin Ahmed, the meeting also discussed a proposal placed by the defence ministry for increasing financial allowance of recipients of gallantry award and their family members. It also approved a proposal for signing Consular Convention between Bangladesh and the Russian Federation, according to Chief Adviser's Press Secretary Syed Fahim Munaim. Foreign Adviser Iftekhar Ahmed Chowdhury during his visit to Russia would sign the convention, the first agreement between Bangladesh and the Russian Federation (after disintegration of the Soviet Union), according to an official. The advisory council also decided to ratify the international convention against Doping in Sports, aiming to make international sport arena free from influence of drug and narcotics. "Following ratification, Bangladesh' position becomes stronger in participating and hosting international sport events," it was stated. Members of the advisory council attended the meeting at the CA's office. Cabinet Secretary and other secretaries concerned were also present.
