Rajshahi journos file GD against Shibir cadres

Three journalists yesterday filed general diaries (GD) separately with Motiher Police Station in connection with attacks on four journalists by the cadres of Islamic Chhatra Shibir on August 5.

Shibir cadres assaulted four journalists and kept two of them confined for three hours to the provost's room at Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Hall of Rajshahi University when they went there to collect information about whether Shibir cadres were enrolling students in the voter list.

Abdullah Iqbal, photojournalist of the daily Jugantor, Meherul Hasan Sujon of the daily Samakal and Salauddin Muhammad Sumon of the Bhorer Kagoj filed the GDs seeking security of life.

They mentioned in the GDs that Shibir cadres Farhad Saimum, Abul Kalam Azad, Russel and four outsiders assaulted them on Sunday when they had gone to the hall at about 12:00 noon to collect information about whether Shibir activists were enrolling students in the voter list.

Later, the cadres took them to the provost's room and kept them confined for three hours in the room. The journalists said the cadres also threatened to kill them and snatched away their cameras, notebooks and mobile phones.

Following the death threat, they filed the GD, they mentioned.

The journalists alleged that when they went to Motiher Police Station to lodge the GD, duty officer Sub-Inspector Shafik misbehaved with them.

Sub-Inspector Shafik registered the GD following direction of higher authorities, the journalists said.

Provost Prof Nurul Islam said a five-member probe committee yesterday began their investigation in this regard.
