The caretaker government is yet to allow detained Awami League (AL) President Sheikh Hasina to see her ailing husband Dr M Wazed Miah who is undergoing treatment at a city hospital. However, the AL chief might be allowed to visit her husband anytime today (Tuesday) or tomorrow, sources said. The AL chief and former prime minister on Saturday appealed to the jail authorities to allow her to see her husband who was admitted to hospital immediately after her arrest on July 16. Wazed is suffering from heart disease, diabetes and other complications. "There was no precedent in the jail code of allowing someone to see an ailing person. As Sheikh Hasina appealed, we have forwarded her application to the home ministry for its decision over the matter. But we have not got any response from the ministry," Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Prison Maj Shamsul Haider Siddiqui told The Daily Star yesterday following a rumour that Hasina would be taken to Square Hospital where her husband is undergoing treatment. Many journalists rushed to Square Hospital in the morning and waited until 3:00pm yesterday for her arrival. Maj Haider said they released Hasina's cousin and AL Presidium Member Sheikh Fazlul Karim Selim on parole as his mother had died. "But her [Hasina] case is not similar to Sheikh Selim's," he said. The jail authorities yesterday did not allow Hasina's income-tax lawyer Khandaker Moniruzzaman meet Hasina at the sub-jail on the Jatiya Sangsad premises. He was supposed to meet the AL president to prepare her wealth statement. The DIG prison said as the last date for submitting her wealth statement is August 8, the lawyer could meet her today (Tuesday). Talking to The Daily Star Hasina's income-tax lawyer, who told reporters on Sunday that he would meet the AL chief yesterday, said the jail authorities asked him to come on Tuesday. "I have already finalised her [Hasina's] wealth statement," he said adding that he hoped to be able to submit Hasina's wealth statement to the Anti-corruption Commission before the deadline. ZILLUR URGEs PARTYMEN TO HELP FLOOD VICTIMS Acting AL President Zillur Rahman yesterday urged all leaders and workers of the AL and its front organisations to stand besides the flood-affected people. In a statement, he said thousands of people across the country have been flood affected. People have died and are dying due to the devastating flood. He urged the party leaders to help the flood victims using their experience in dealing with the devastating flood of 1998 when the AL government was in power. He also urged the solvent people of the country, regardless of their professions, to help the flood victims.
