Floodwater started receding from the north and northeastern regions of the country while epidemics like diarrhoea and cholera broke out. They observed that flood affected people are in desperate need of relief. But the latest reports indicate that the relief operations are plagued by anomalies and corruption, apart from shortage of the materials that the marooned people need to survive. After floodwater recedes, government should take special measures so that farmers can cultivate their seed lands, they urged the government. Duta General Secretary Prof Anwar Hossain said the government is barring different organisations from collecting relief materials using banners on the university campus and other places. If such situation continues, different organisations, which collect relief and distribute in every flood and other calamities, will be disheartened and subsequently that will have massive negative impact on the affected. He urged the government to lift all kinds of restrictions on collecting and distributing relief goods. Among other organisations, Labour Employment Right, Karmojibi Nari, Bangladesh Medical Association, Bangladesh Garment Buying House Association and Jatiya Krishak Samiti O Bangladesh Khetmojur Union urged all concerns to come forward with relief and medicines. Meanwhile, the DU authorities formed a committee headed by Duta President Prof Sadrul Amin to conduct relief activities. This committee intends to conduct relief work among the affected people across the country with the assistance of DU teachers, students, officials and others. It will hold a meeting on the campus at 3:30pm today in this connection. Bangladesh Paribesh Andolon formed a relief cell and urged all to donate to the cell.
