HC to hear two writ petitions of Hasina today

Hearing of a couple of writ petitions filed by detained Awami League President Sheikh Hasina has been deferred by a day as the government side prayed for time.

Both the writ petitions would come up for hearing today, said a counsel for Hasina, emerging from a High Court division bench yesterday.

Hasina has challenged the legality of government action incorporating the extortion case filed against her by businessman Noor Ali under the Emergency Power Rules (EPR) and the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) notice asking her to submit wealth statement.

The bench may also pass an order today on the matter of fixing date for hearing the rule issued on July 30 upon the government following a writ petition of Hasina challenging the legality of an identical government action placing another extortion case against her.

Another businessman, Azam J Chowdhury, has sued her in the case under the EPR at a time when a countrywide drive launched by the caretaker government against serious crime and corruption has been underway.

The hearing of the rule has to be disposed of by August 14 as per the orders of the Supreme Court that halted the operation of the High Court orders staying the proceedings of the extortion case pending with the lower court and granting bail to Hasina.
